Frequently Asked Questions

For an hour massage, how much time do I need to schedule?

For your first appointment at Massage At Saratoga, you’ll need an extra 15 minutes to fill out a health history form and have a brief discussion with the therapist.  Then, you’ll receive your massage for a full hour.  Allow a few extra minutes afterwards to get dressed, pay for your session, and schedule your next massage.  On future visits, allow an extra 5 minutes before and after the massage.

What should I expect on my first visit?

When you arrive, you’ll need to fill out a short health history form.  You’ll have a discussion with your therapist about what you need from that day’s session (for example, pain relief, deep tissue work on certain areas, or general relaxation).  This is a good time to ask any questions and to let the therapist know of your concerns.  After that, your therapist will leave the room and give you a chance to undress in private and get on the massage table under the sheets and blanket.

What do I need to wear?

Any clothing is all right.  You can come straight from work if you need to.  Take into consideration that your body will have lotion or oil on it after your massage.  Sometimes people bring comfortable clothes to change into after their massage.

Do I have to take my clothes off?

You may get undressed to your level of comfort.  When the massage starts you will be covered with a sheet and/or blanket.  The massage therapist pulls back the sheet uncovering one area of the body (such as an arm, leg, or the back).  After that area is massaged, the therapist covers it again.

What should I do after my massage?

Within an hour, I encourage you to drink at least 8 ounces of water.  An extra glass of water aids your body’s ability to heal itself and prevents soreness.  Remember to stretch whenever possible. Even a quick stretch reminds your body how good it felt after your massage.  Tell your friends!  I offer rewards for referrals.

What is deep tissue massage?

A combination of Swedish massage, neuromuscular techniques and trigger point therapy on areas of the body that need extra care due to overuse, injury, or tension.

What should I expect during the massage?

You will be covered by a sheet or blanket throughout the massage.  The therapist will uncover the area of the body that is massaged and drape the sheet to protect your privacy.  Typically, during a full hour massage, your arms, legs, back, neck, shoulders, and feet will all receive a massage.  Please tell the therapist if you would like more attention paid to one particular area.  Also tell the therapist if you are uncomfortable with the amount of pressure you are receiving, the temperature of the room, or anything else.  Adjustments can be made to make you more comfortable.

What are the side effects of massage?

Massage increases your circulation.  If you are on a time-released medication, you may notice a slight change in its effectiveness.  Drinking a glass of water right after your massage may help.  Some people experience mild soreness after a deep tissue massage.  This is a natural effect of overly-tense muscles returning to their original state.  It usually goes away on its own or with a mild pain reliever such as ibuprofen, leaving your muscles feeling better than they did before the massage.

When is it not ok to get a massage?

You should definitely not get a massage is you have a fever or have high blood pressure that is not controlled by regular medication. If you feel that a cold is coming on, you may get a massage but this could increase the intensity of the cold symptoms you are feeling. The benefit is that a massage may decrease the length of time that you have your cold, but it probably will be much more unpleasant. Drinking extra water will help.

You should not receive massage on an area where you have an acute injury or broken skin. However, massage on other parts of your body, particularly your feet, may help relax you and improve your body’s natural ability to heal itself.

What is the cost of a massage?

Each massage at Massage At Saratoga is customized to your particular needs for that day. At your first massage you will be asked to fill out a health history form and then you will sit with your therapist to find out which areas of your body are sore, in pain, or need extra attention. With each following massage, your therapist will check in to make sure what you want from that day’s session (such as more work on the same area as your last session, stress relief, a new or a new problem area).

You will be on the massage table for a full hour if you are receiving a on-hour massage, but please allow a little extra time before and after your appointment time so you don’t need to rush. See our Rates and Services.  Please watch the website and newsletter for discounts and special offers.
